Cameron, N.C. — Authorities are investigating two shootings that occurred within minutes of each other on Sunday, believing the incidents are connected. The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were first called to Scooter Lane around 3:45 p.m. after receiving a report of gunfire.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 18-year-old Damon Bird suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Bird indicated that he was approached while walking on McDuffie Road when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Fifteen minutes after the first shooting, police in Sanford received an emergency call regarding two individuals who had been shot on Palm Drive. One victim at the scene, a 16-year-old, was pronounced dead, while a 20-year-old man named Mario Ramos was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for further care.
Investigators soon determined that Bird and another individual, Donald Martin, had planned to meet Ramos and the younger victim at the intersection of McDuffie Road and Scooter Lane. During the meeting, Bird allegedly displayed a firearm and attempted to rob the two victims, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. This confrontation left Bird and Ramos injured and claimed the life of the 16-year-old.
Following the investigation, law enforcement apprehended Bird and Martin, charging both individuals with first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, and several firearm-related offenses. They are currently being held at the Harnett County Detention Center without bond.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incidents to reach out through the Harnett County TIP line or contact the Detective Division.
