Charlotte Teen Charged with Murder in Fatal Shooting Off Beatties Ford Road

Charlotte, North Carolina – A 16-year-old has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student in northwest Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Melakah Corbette, was found shot to death in a neighborhood just off Beatties Ford Road in the early morning hours of February 1st. Detectives initially stated that they did not believe the shooting to be a random act.

CMPD announced on Monday that a 16-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed due to their age, has been arrested in relation to Corbette’s death. The individual faces charges of murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon following an interview with homicide detectives.

Youth violence continues to be a concerning issue in Charlotte, with CMPD reporting a 34% increase in the number of juvenile suspects arrested last year compared to the previous year. Furthermore, there was a 33% rise in the number of underage individuals named as suspects in shootings. Many underage suspects are accumulating multiple charges as they are not being held on secure custody orders and instead are being released back to their families.

Chief Johnny Jennings expressed his frustration with the cycle of catch and release, emphasizing the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing repeat offenders. He highlighted the efforts of investigators in solving crimes and bringing closure to victims, only to see offenders returned to the same environment, leading to further offenses.

The investigation into Corbette’s death remains active, with CMPD urging anyone with information to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers or speak directly with homicide detectives. Calls to Crime Stoppers can be made anonymously, and tips are vital in helping solve cases and bring justice to victims and their families. Youth violence prevention remains a priority for law enforcement agencies in Charlotte as they work towards creating safer communities for all residents.
