Collision: Father Charged with Aggravated Murder After Deputies’ Fatal Traffic Incident in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — A man has been charged with aggravated murder following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy. The deputy was struck and killed while managing traffic at a busy intersection, prompting an outpouring of grief from the law enforcement community and the public.

Rodney Hinton Jr. is accused of hitting the deputy on Friday as he was assisting at the corner of Martin Luther King Drive and Burnet Woods Drive. Authorities confirmed that the deputy subsequently died at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey, visibly emotional, reflected on the loss during a press conference. She shared that the deputy had recently retired yet continued to serve as a special deputy. “He was a tremendous person, and we have all suffered a tremendous loss,” McGuffey said, emphasizing the deep respect and admiration felt by his colleagues and community.

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge expressed her condolences and noted that the deputy was on duty, performing his responsibilities when the tragic event occurred. “He was just out doing his job,” Theetge remarked, highlighting the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

In a related incident, Hinton Jr. is identified as the father of Ryan Hinton, an 18-year-old who lost his life in a police-involved shooting just a day earlier in East Price Hill. Police reported that Ryan was among four individuals in a stolen vehicle that was located nearby. The situation escalated when the suspects fled on foot, leading to a confrontation with officers.

In the ensuing altercation, Ryan allegedly brandished a firearm at the police, prompting an officer to discharge their weapon, resulting in Ryan suffering fatal injuries, according to police accounts.

As investigations continue into both the deputy’s death and the officer-involved shooting, the Cincinnati community grapples with the sorrow of losing two lives under such tragic circumstances. The dual incidents have reignited discussions about officer safety and the challenges faced by law enforcement in today’s society.

The tragic death of the deputy has resonated deeply within the community, demonstrating the sacrifices law enforcement officers make while serving the public. In these challenging times, both the families affected and the broader community are left to mourn and seek solace in one another.
