CINCINNATI — A community grappling with grief gathered to honor the memory of 17-year-old Jayshawn Cornelious, who was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting earlier this week. Friends and family released balloons Wednesday outside the home on Percy Avenue where he lost his life, reflecting on the profound impact he had on their lives.
During the emotional tribute, Sam Malone, a family spokesperson, expressed the heartache felt by those who knew Jayshawn. “He was an angel, taken far too soon,” Malone said, while condemning the violent actions that led to his untimely death. “There are no words to defend such cowardice.”
According to Cincinnati police, gunfire rang out at Jayshawn’s home, with more than a dozen bullets striking the property. As mourners gathered, the remnants of that violence were visible, with bullet holes still marked on the walls.
Jayshawn’s aunt, Regina, voiced the community’s collective confusion and sorrow. “Why? It’s a question everyone needs to ask,” she told reporters. “He brought so much joy. He was a compassionate soul, dedicated to his younger brothers and family.”
Jayshawn was a rising junior at Hughes STEM High School, where he had aspirations of becoming a mechanic. His family remembers him as someone who embodied kindness and responsibility, caring deeply for his siblings and those around him.
“He was larger than life,” Regina recalled. “He had a servant’s heart—his absence is a tremendous loss for everyone who knew him.”
