LAGRANGE, Ga. – A 14-year-old boy, Demarrion Carter, was tragically shot and killed while sitting on his front porch in LaGrange, prompting a fervent search for the unidentified gunman. Local police are investigating the murder, which occurred suddenly as the shooter approached, fired, and fled the scene.
Demarrion’s death has left his family and community reeling. His mother, deeply distraught, has been unable to publicly comment on her profound loss. Instead, Jerome Cofield, founder of the youth empowerment group Empowerment 3D where Demarrion was a mentee, has become a spokesperson for the grieving family.
Cofield reminisced about Carter, describing him as a young man of integrity and responsibility, well beyond his years. “Demarrion was more than just a participant in our programs; he was like a son to me. He always discussed his dreams enthusiastically, hoping to become a basketball player,” Cofield shared.
The teenager was part of Empowerment 3D for five years, an organization that emphasizes life skills and community service. Cofield highlighted the group’s multifaceted mentoring approach, noting that activities often included community service, such as paying for strangers’ groceries.
Cofield expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the senseless violence that took Carter’s life. “If I had known that was the last time I would see him, I would have embraced him and never let go,” Cofield lamented.
Police have been tirelessly working to gather information on the shooter, asking the local community for any leads. The lack of a clear motive and the abruptness of the attack have complicated the investigation. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division of the LaGrange Police Department are leading the effort.
Empowerment 3D and Carter’s family have appealed to the public for assistance. “Demarrion was always ready to help others. Now we need the community to do the same for him,” Cofield urged. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward and contribute to bringing justice for Carter.
Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge about the incident or the suspect to contact Detective C. Brown. Witnesses or those with information can also provide anonymous tips through various community safety resources.
This tragedy has sparked a broader dialogue in the community about youth violence and safety. As the investigation continues, Carter’s loved ones are hoping for closure and justice, keeping the memory of his aspirations and kind-hearted nature alive.
