San Diego, California — A man who played a crucial role in a deadly scheme targeting his own mother has been sentenced to 55 years to life in prison for murder. Luther Brown, 53, was convicted for his part in the strangulation of Laura Doyle, 65, alongside Brendan Conrad Doyle, her son, who helped orchestrate the crime.
The tragic events unfolded in October 2020. Prosecutors revealed that Brown and Doyle devised a plan while incarcerated together, aiming to take control of a $1.5 million trust fund belonging to Laura Doyle. Brendan Doyle was already sentenced last year to 28 years and eight months for his involvement, which included charges of identity theft and robbery.
Laura Doyle’s death was initially believed to be natural until a neighbor, concerned about the circumstances, alerted authorities. Prosecutor Jaimie Thomas shared that the victim’s neighbors had long noted abusive exchanges between Laura and her son, highlighting a pattern of troubling behavior. Just a year before her death, Brendan Doyle had allegedly choked Laura to coerce her into writing him checks.
An autopsy later contradicted the initial assumptions about her death, revealing multiple injuries, including rib fractures and damage to the hyoid bone, suggesting a brutal act of strangulation. Thomas emphasized that the force used was sufficient to break Laura’s spine, underscoring the violent nature of her murder.
According to prosecutors, evidence indicated that Brown entered Laura’s home while she slept and executed the fatal act. DNA found on her clothing linked Brown to the scene, and investigators discovered messages between him and Brendan Doyle discussing their plans and means to access the residence.
Before his arrest, Brown reportedly boasted about his criminal exploits, even labeling himself a “contract killer.” Prosecutors highlighted how Brendan Doyle misused his mother’s credit card to the tune of over $11,000 posthumously, showcasing his predatory behavior.
During the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Marlea Dell’Anno argued that Brendan Doyle masterminded the murder and reiterated his history of mistreating his mother. However, Thomas contended that communications between the two men painted a different picture. She asserted that Brown exhibited domineering behavior, effectively controlling the orchestration of the crime.
