Convicted Sacramento Gang Member Faces up to 74 Years in Greyhound Bus Shooting Case

Oroville, CALIFORNIA – Asaahdi Coleman, the man responsible for a tragic shooting on a Greyhound bus in Oroville in 2022, has been found guilty of second-degree murder. The jury convicted Coleman, 23, of Sacramento, of second-degree murder and attempted murder with gun enhancements, according to a news release from Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey. Despite being a member of a Sacramento gang, Coleman was acquitted of three counts of attempted murder.

During the trial, Coleman’s defense attorney argued that his unspecified mental illness hindered his ability to intend to kill and that he was shooting at people without the intent to harm, as shared by Ramsey. Coleman now faces up to 74 years to life in prison, with eligibility for parole after 25 years under California’s 2019 Youthful Offender Parole law. Sentencing by Judge Corie Carraway is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on May 31.

The horrific incident on February 2, 2022, involved Coleman opening fire on a Greyhound bus, resulting in the death of 43-year-old Karin Dolton. Several others were injured, including an 11-year-old girl, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, a 32-year-old man, and a 38-year-old man. The tragic event shook the community and highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence.

Coleman’s conviction comes as a step towards justice for the victims and their families, offering some closure and accountability for the senseless act of violence. The legal proceedings shed light on the complexities of mental health and its intersection with criminal behavior, sparking discussions on improving mental health services and addressing underlying issues that contribute to such violent acts.

As the community reflects on the tragedy and looks towards healing, it is essential to continue supporting those affected by the shooting and advocating for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
