Convicted Shooter of Kaylin Gillis Receives 25 Years to Life: Boyfriend Vows Unforgiveness

Hebron, New York – A man convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Kaylin Gillis, 20, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Kevin Monahan, 66, faced charges over the tragic incident that occurred in April 2023 in the rural town of Hebron, upstate New York.

Gillis had unwittingly driven into Monahan’s driveway with a group of friends while searching for a party at a nearby residence. When the group realized their mistake and attempted to leave, Monahan fired a fatal shot, striking Gillis in the neck as she sat in the front passenger seat of an SUV driven by her boyfriend.

During the trial, Monahan claimed the shooting was accidental, stating that he tripped before firing the fatal shot, having previously fired a warning shot. Prosecutors argued that Monahan acted out of anger and had a history of harboring irrational rage towards trespassers.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning guilty verdicts against Monahan in January for murder, reckless endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. Gillis’ father, Andrew Gillis, described his daughter as a compassionate individual with aspirations of becoming a marine biologist or veterinarian.

Monahan’s sentencing to 25 years to life in prison came after prosecutors requested the maximum penalty, citing the seriousness of the crime and Monahan’s actions following the shooting. The defense had appealed for leniency, but Monahan chose not to address the court.

Judge Adam Michelini emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “It’s not okay to shoot people because they mistakenly turn down your driveway.” He added that it was crucial for Monahan to remain incarcerated to prevent further harm to others.

Gillis’ boyfriend, Blake Walsh, expressed his anguish and inability to forgive Monahan for his role in the tragic incident, highlighting the profound impact of the loss on their lives. The emotional toll of Gillis’ untimely death reverberated through the courtroom as family and friends shared their grief and memories of the young woman.
