NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Court proceedings are set for today involving three individuals charged in connection with the tragic death of 11-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia. Those appearing in court include Mimi’s mother, her aunt, and her mother’s former boyfriend.
Mimi’s remains were discovered abandoned in a tote outside a residence on Clark Street on October 8. Authorities estimate she had been deceased for nearly a year at that time. An investigation conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner concluded that the young girl died from severe malnourishment resulting from child abuse, officially categorizing her death as a homicide.
At the time of her death, Mimi weighed approximately 26 to 27 pounds, far below the healthy weight range for a child of her age. The investigation revealed that Mimi’s death likely occurred while her family was residing in Farmington, and her body was subsequently transported to New Britain, where it remained concealed in a basement.
The arrests in this disturbing case include Karla Garcia, Mimi’s mother; Jonatan Nanita, her mother’s former boyfriend; and Jackelyn Garcia, the aunt. Each faces multiple serious charges related to Mimi’s death, including murder with special circumstances and conspiracy to commit murder. The seriousness of the allegations reflects the gravity of the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s tragic fate.
Nanita was taken into custody on October 13 and has since been charged with additional offenses, including tampering with physical evidence and improper disposal of a body. He is being held on a bond set at $5 million. Similarly, Karla Garcia, facing a range of charges including intentional cruelty and unlawful restraint, is also being held on a $5 million bond.
Jackelyn Garcia faces slightly less severe charges, including unlawful restraint and risk of injury to a child, and is being held on a $1 million bond.
