Coworker killed in shootout with Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies

Pompano Beach, Florida – Authorities reported a fatal incident involving a suspect who engaged in a shootout with deputies of the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night, resulting in his death at the scene. The confrontation followed the suspect’s alleged fatal shooting of his coworker in Pompano Beach.

Deputies from BSO were dispatched to the 3200 block of West Copans Road in response to reports of a shooting just before 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, law enforcement was informed that a man had been shot, with the possible shooter still in the vicinity, leading to a tense situation.

At the scene, deputies encountered the armed suspect, initiating a confrontation where gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement. The 59-year-old suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as confirmed by BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright.

Investigations revealed that prior to the shootout, the suspect had fatally shot his 42-year-old coworker, with both individuals identified as employees of Broward County Mass Transit. Cell phone footage captured the intense exchange of gunfire between the suspect and deputies during the incident.

Witnesses recounting the harrowing experience inside the facility at the time of the shooting described a terrifying atmosphere. Authorities have since begun investigating both the murder of the coworker and the subsequent deputy-involved shooting.
