Dating App Dangers: Minnesota Artist and Activist Killed in Colombia

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. State Department is warning American travelers about the risks of using dating apps while visiting Colombia, following a series of “suspicious deaths” of U.S. citizens in the South American country. Colombia has been designated as a country where Americans should “reconsider travel” due to concerns about crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping risks. Certain areas, especially along the border, are marked as “Do not travel” zones.

The advisory, issued this week, comes after a string of “eight suspicious deaths of private U.S. citizens” in Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city, between November and December of 2023. The deaths are believed to be related to forced overdose or suspected homicides, with some involving the use of online dating applications.

Minnesota comedian Tou Ger Xiong was one of the victims of such a crime. He was kidnapped and held for ransom after arranging to meet a woman he had connected with online. Sadly, he was later found dead.

The State Department advisory also highlights the prevalence of criminals using dating apps to lure victims to public places, where they are then assaulted and robbed. Incidents like this have been reported in major cities such as Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogota, with many going underreported.

It’s worth noting that the U.S. embassy in Colombia has noted a significant increase in reports of people being lured through dating apps, coinciding with a rise in crimes committed against foreign visitors. In the last quarter of 2023, there was a 200% increase in thefts against foreign visitors and a 29% rise in violent deaths, with the majority of those victims being U.S. citizens.

In light of these warnings, the State Department advises that those who choose to use dating apps while in Colombia should only meet in public places, avoid isolated locations, and share their plans with a friend or family member. It’s a stark reminder of the potential dangers that lurk in the shadows of online dating, especially in unfamiliar territories like Colombia.
