Daughter strangles 97-year-old Florida woman to death

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – A tragic mystery unraveled inside a quiet Florida home the day after Christmas, where deputies discovered the lifeless body of a 97-year-old woman and a tangled web of devastating secrets.

Authorities say Martha Jo Blake, 66, now faces a charge of first-degree murder following the death of her mother, Patricia Blake. When deputies arrived December 26, they found Martha at the scene. Just hours earlier, she’d claimed her mother was alive and well the previous night, but suspicions quickly mounted as the investigation unfolded.

The initial explanation pointed to longstanding health struggles. Patricia, stricken with Parkinson’s disease and a thyroid disorder, had long depended on her daughter’s care. Still, it was clear something more ominous had transpired. The family’s physician, residing in Maine, was unable to certify the cause of death, prompting a full autopsy at the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office.

It was there that chilling details emerged. Medical examiners determined that Patricia’s passing was not simply the result of advancing age or a failing body. Instead, they cited evidence inconsistent with natural death—a pattern of findings that pointed to foul play. There were marks that suggested something had been placed over Patricia’s face, as well as signs of internal bleeding in her mouth and cheeks, broken neck bones, and hemorrhaging beneath the surface.

Investigators watched body camera footage of the daughter at the scene, describing a woman devoted to her mother, refusing to leave her side. Yet beneath the veneer of caregiving, detectives sensed deeper anguish. Martha reportedly told deputies she’d been more than a caregiver for the past five years—she had been her mother’s constant companion and support.

The investigation took a sharp turn after detectives obtained a search warrant for the home, uncovering a history of somber conversations between mother and daughter. About eighteen months before Patricia’s death, the two women had discussed so-called “death with dignity” options during a consultation with Patricia’s doctor in Maine. The physician reportedly declined such a request; Patricia wasn’t suffering from a terminal illness under state guidelines.

Yet police contend Martha did not abandon her mother’s pleas. Facing her mother’s despair, Martha allegedly recounted attempts to find a more merciful end, suggesting they considered an overdose but lacked sufficient medication to proceed. According to police documents, Martha claimed Patricia had repeatedly expressed the wish to die, voicing her desire for release as her health declined.

After being read her rights, Martha stood by her account, stating that her actions were consistent with her mother’s wishes, investigators reported.

Martha Jo Blake was taken into custody and booked into the Main Detention Center in West Palm Beach. She remains held without bond. Her first court appearance is set for January 25, 2026.

Detectives continue to piece together the final hours inside the Blakes’ home, searching for clarity in a case where love, desperation, and mortality tragically converged.
