Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to HMC Farms Fruits Sparks CDC Warning

Kingsburg, California – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are issuing a warning about a deadly Listeria outbreak linked to fruits from a company based in Kingsburg. The outbreak has led to 11 infections and one death, according to officials. The affected fruits include peaches, nectarines, and plums from HMC Farms, and the outbreak has been connected to seven states across the country.

HMC Farms has recalled the fruits sold between May 1, 2022, and November 15, 2023 after Listeria was found in samples of peaches by the FDA. Although these products are no longer for sale in stores, CDC officials advise people to check their kitchen for any of the recalled products and immediately dispose of them.

Listeria is a particularly harmful bacteria, especially to pregnant individuals, those 65 and older, or people with weaker immune systems. The CDC is urging anyone who may have consumed the affected fruits to monitor themselves for symptoms of Listeria infection, such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues. It is important for those who may have symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.

The CDC’s warning serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with foodborne illnesses and emphasizes the importance of proper food safety measures. This outbreak highlights the need for continued vigilance in monitoring the food supply chain to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about food recalls and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families from potential health risks.
