Opelousas, Louisiana – An off-duty corrections deputy from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office tragically lost her life in a shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday night in Opelousas. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Chanterria “Mackey” Albert, succumbed to her injuries at an Opelousas hospital following the shooting on Park Avenue. Another individual was also injured in the incident but remains in stable condition.
Reports of shots fired on Park Avenue prompted a swift response from law enforcement around 10:30 p.m. The two victims had already been transported to the hospital by the time officers arrived at the scene. Subsequently, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department affirmed that the deceased was indeed one of their corrections deputies.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a valued member of their law enforcement family due to what he deemed “senseless gun violence” in Opelousas. Albert, who had been hired in May 2022, worked alongside her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert, within the Sheriff’s Office.
