Double Murder in Meridian: Suspect Flees, Fires at Deputy, and Captured in Nearby Neighborhood

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Police in Meridian, Idaho were called to a quiet North Meridian neighborhood on Sunday evening in response to a domestic-related 9-1-1 call. Upon arrival, they discovered that a double murder had taken place. Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea addressed the media on Monday morning, expressing sympathy for the families affected by the tragedy. The victims, 33-year-old Emily Works and 41-year-old Sarah Walmsley, were both shot to death at a home on North Cougar Way. The suspect, 33-year-old Clint Caleb Powers, quickly became the focus of the investigation.

After the murders, Powers fled the scene and later carjacked a vehicle not far from the home. A deputy in the area located the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop Powers, who then fired shots at the deputy before fleeing on foot. Fortunately, no one was injured during the subsequent search for Powers. Eventually, the suspect was apprehended after he was seen jumping over a fence into a backyard.

One witness reported seeing the suspect running across a walking path before the chase came to an end. Authorities also confirmed that an eleven-year-old minor, who was at the home where the crime occurred, was able to leave and is now with family members. Chief Basterrechea emphasized the importance of seeking help in domestic violence situations, providing resources for those in need.
