Florence, South Carolina, is reeling from a tragic incident that claimed the life of a pregnant woman after a shooting on December 1. Zynaija Thomas, a 19-year-old from Bishopville, was in the passenger seat of a vehicle when she was struck by gunfire. The Florence County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Thomas was approximately 19 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Authorities have arrested 17-year-old Ja’kaurie Bell, who faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. According to police reports, the shooting occurred in the 600 block of Roberts Street.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which revealed a vehicle near the crime scene. They later identified Bell as the driver of that vehicle. Reports indicate that Bell allegedly drove to the scene with others, where they opened fire on the car occupied by Thomas and her boyfriend. Fortunately, Thomas’ boyfriend was unharmed and took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Bell is currently being held in a detention center while awaiting a bond hearing. As of now, law enforcement has not ruled out the possibility of further arrests related to the shooting.
Residents in the vicinity have expressed their shock and sorrow over the incident. One local man voiced his frustration over gun violence, longing for a future where firearms are absent from the streets. Another resident shared concern for the safety of young people, reflecting on the devastating impact the tragedy has on families.
Florence’s Interim Police Chief, Stephen Starling, described the event as a community tragedy. He emphasized the importance of engaging with youth and providing mentorship to prevent future incidents of gun violence. “We need to do better at mentoring and supporting our young people,” Starling stated, urging the community to become active participants in addressing the root causes of such violence.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are actively seeking more information from the public. Community leaders stress the necessity for collaboration and communication within neighborhoods to foster a safer environment for all residents.
