Port Hardy, British Columbia – In response to a recent surge in overdose deaths, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have taken decisive action in a drug-related investigation, resulting in the arrest of six individuals and the execution of two search warrants.
The operation, launched by Port Hardy RCMP in early March with support from Island District RCMP General Investigation Section (IDGIS) and Port Alice RCMP, targeted the local drug crisis. On March 9th, authorities apprehended six suspects and carried out searches at locations in Port Hardy, uncovering sizable amounts of suspected Fentanyl, crack cocaine, and cocaine. Additionally, a handgun and a shotgun were seized during the operation.
Chief Superintendent Shawna Baher, Island District RCMP Commander, expressed the RCMP’s commitment to aiding the community of Port Hardy and nearby Indigenous communities in reducing overdose fatalities. The police are working alongside their law enforcement counterparts to determine the individuals’ roles in the drug trade, prioritizing public safety and ensuring proper prosecution of those involved.
A detailed report will be submitted to the Crown Counsel for potential charges against the arrested individuals. Port Hardy RCMP announced their intention to maintain a heightened police presence in the area, with the support of BC Highway Patrol and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC), as stated in a media release.
