Drunk Driving Suspect Charged with Murder After Fatal Crash in El Paso: Man Faces $650,000 Bond

El Paso, Texas – An El Paso man with two prior DWI convictions now faces a murder charge after a suspected drunk driving crash led to the death of another driver at an East Side traffic intersection. Enrique Joel Pena, 35, was arrested in connection with the crash that occurred on George Dieter Drive near Pellicano Drive, El Paso Police Department officials stated.

Reports indicate Pena was driving a 2020 Nissan Rogue when he rear-ended a 2000 Chevrolet Metro driven by Isidro Ruiz Jr., 42, who was stopped at the intersection. Tragically, Ruiz, a resident of Fabens, lost his life at the scene while Pena sustained minor injuries. An investigation by authorities revealed that Pena was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the collision, leading to the murder charge due to the fatal consequences of driving under the influence.

Pena, a Lower Valley resident, has a history of DWI arrests dating back to 2012 and 2014. He was sentenced to probation for both prior arrests. Following the recent crash, Pena was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $650,000 bond. As of Sunday, he has not posted bail.

The tragic incident marks the 14th traffic-related death of the year in El Paso, with authorities highlighting the importance of preventing such reckless acts on the road. Last year, at the same time, there were 16 traffic-related fatalities, underscoring the ongoing need for road safety measures and awareness.

While the community mourns the loss of Isidro Ruiz Jr., the case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence. The legal proceedings against Enrique Joel Pena will undoubtedly shed light on the importance of responsible driving practices and the severe penalties that can result from reckless behavior behind the wheel.
