COLUMBIA, S.C. — A shooting outside a bar in Columbia left one man dead and another in custody early Friday morning. Police responded to the incident, which occurred around the time the S Bar was closing, adding to the alarming rise in late-night violence in the area.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 53-year-old Bernard Jackson Jr., who faces charges of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Officers from the Columbia Police Department reported that the confrontation began as patrons were leaving the establishment located on Garners Ferry Road.
Witnesses stated that a physical altercation broke out, prompting police intervention. In the course of the ensuing chaos, Jackson allegedly pulled a firearm and shot the victim, who has been identified as 33-year-old Wendell F. Sholar, an employee at the bar. Sholar was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Jackson was arrested shortly after the incident and taken in for questioning. He was officially charged by the afternoon and is currently being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. His bail status remains unclear.
