HICKORY, N.C. — A mass shooting during a house party in Catawba County has prompted authorities to arrest and charge eight individuals in connection with the incident, which left one man dead and 11 others injured. Investigators have determined that multiple shooters were involved in the violence that erupted on June 1.
Authorities announced the arrests of two additional suspects early Friday, bringing renewed focus to a shocking case that has rattled the local community. Ke’andre Mack and Toland Huff, Jr. have been charged with attempted first-degree murder alongside 22-year-old Zachary Bates, who was also taken into custody. All three are set to appear in court later today.
Earlier in the week, 20-year-old Garon Killian made his initial court appearance, facing identical charges of attempted first-degree murder. His bond was originally set at $200,000 but was revoked by a judge following an earlier unrelated incident. Sheriff Don Brown expressed frustration at the temporary release of Killian, labeling the situation “infuriating.”
In addition to the main suspects, law enforcement has also apprehended two men, Patrick Tolbert and Raekwon Craig, who face charges related to providing alcohol to minors at the party. They were arrested on multiple counts of aiding and abetting individuals under 21 years of age.
Eighteen-year-old Izaiah Mitchell has emerged as a person of interest in the case, already facing charges from a separate incident involving robbery. Authorities believe he may be connected to the shooting. Moreover, Zoe Braswell has been charged as an accessory after the fact to attempted murder, further complicating the legal landscape surrounding the event.
Detectives have identified the victim of the shooting as 58-year-old Shawn Hood, who allegedly played a role in organizing the party. Investigators are still piecing together the sequence of events; it is currently unclear whether Hood was the intended target or simply a casualty of the chaotic violence. Sheriffs reported that over 80 rounds were fired during the incident, resulting in a crime scene that spans both the house and its surrounding areas.
Local resident David Tolbert has indicated that his daughter hired private security for the gathering, raising questions about the adequacy of safety measures in place. The ongoing investigation has garnered the attention and resources of local police, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
As the community grapples with the fallout from this tragic event, many are left wondering how a gathering intended for celebration devolved into such a devastating act of violence. With court proceedings underway, the impact of this incident is sure to resonate throughout Hickory and beyond for some time to come.
