Elgin Man Convicted of Brutal Kidnapping and Assault, Faces Lengthy Prison Sentence

Elgin, Illinois — A 34-year-old man has been convicted of kidnapping and violently assaulting a woman earlier this year, as announced by Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser. Darnell L. Rhodes was found guilty of aggravated kidnapping and other serious charges following a brutal attack that occurred between March 13 and 14.

Rhodes, a resident of the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, faces a potential sentence of six to 30 years in prison. During the trial, prosecutors outlined the harrowing details of the crime, emphasizing the violent nature of the incident which involved two accomplices, Roger A. Heaps and Lloyd D. Hayes Jr. The trio reportedly abducted the victim, at times brandishing a knife, and transported her to one of their homes where she endured severe physical abuse.

“This case involved one of the most egregious unprovoked assaults I have encountered in my 25 years as a prosecutor,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar. He highlighted the need for justice, stating that the community is safer with those responsible behind bars. The victim, who is still healing from her injuries, has shown incredible strength and resilience as she seeks to rebuild her life in the wake of this traumatic event.

The attack left the victim with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, stab wounds, and significant bruising. Reports indicated that her injuries were severe enough to result in both eyes being swollen shut, causing grave physical and emotional distress.

Rhodes remains in custody at the Kane County jail, with Judge John Barsanti scheduling the sentencing for September 25 at the Kane County Judicial Center. Heaps has already been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed violence earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Hayes Jr. faces several charges, including attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping, with his status hearing set for September 12. The case has drawn significant attention, not only due to its violent nature but also because of the courageous response from the victim.

Key contributors to the investigation, including victim advocates and members of the Elgin Police Department, received praise from prosecutors for their extensive efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Their collective work has played a crucial role in supporting the victim as she navigates the aftermath of the attack.
