Emergency State: Haiti Extends Curfew in Ongoing Battle Against Gang Violence

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Haiti’s government has declared an extension of the state of emergency and nighttime curfew in efforts to quell violent gang attacks that have brought the capital of Port-au-Prince to a standstill. Gangs have been engaging in fierce clashes as they vie for political dominance, leading to widespread chaos and destruction in the city.

The initial three-day curfew proved ineffective as gangs continued their onslaught on police stations and other state institutions during the night. With the already struggling National Police unable to contain the escalating violence due to limited resources, Haiti remains in a state of turmoil. Experts, such as Haitian politics expert Robert Fatton, note that the armed groups currently hold the upper hand in Haiti’s political landscape.

The eruption of violence commenced a week ago following Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s agreement to hold general elections in mid-2025. While seeking international support, Henry faced challenges as a U.N.-backed police deployment from East Africa was deemed unconstitutional by a court ruling in January. Amidst soaring gang violence, Henry found himself stranded in Puerto Rico after armed groups besieged the international airport, preventing his return to Haiti.

The devastating gang attacks in Haiti have resulted in numerous casualties, including police officers, and have left thousands homeless. Reports have surfaced of gangs looting food supplies at the main port in Port-au-Prince, sparking fears of widespread food shortages in the region. The World Food Program has had to suspend its maritime transport services due to the escalating insecurity, leaving crucial supplies stranded at the port.

In response to the escalating crisis, the U.N. special envoy for Haiti has called for the immediate deployment of a U.N.-backed force to prevent further chaos in the country. As the situation deteriorates, the U.S. has considered deploying a Marine Corps Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team to safeguard the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. The international community remains on high alert as Haiti plunges deeper into crisis, with calls for immediate action to restore stability and security in the embattled nation.

Gunfire continues to echo through the streets of Port-au-Prince, as residents demand new leadership and a way out of the relentless violence gripping the country. Amidst the chaos, businesses remain closed, and essential supplies are dwindling, leaving people fearful and anxious. The worsening crisis has also prompted neighboring countries like The Bahamas to take precautionary measures to address the influx of Haitians fleeing the violence.

As political leaders and stakeholders work to find a consensus for a resolution, the international community watches with growing concern over the deteriorating situation. The urgent need for political stability and the restoration of peace in Haiti remains a top priority as the country teeters on the brink of further turmoil.
