EMMET COUNTY, Mich. — Two brothers were honored on Friday for their courageous act of heroism that likely saved a woman’s life earlier this month. Emmet County Sheriff Matt Leirstein and Prosecutor Mike Schuitema presented Charlie and Cody Parks with a plaque recognizing their quick response during a volatile situation.
The incident unfolded when the woman confronted John Zarling about allegations of animal abuse. Tensions escalated, resulting in Zarling attacking her. Witnesses say that the brothers, who were nearby, did not hesitate to intervene.
Sheriff Leirstein praised the brothers for their bravery, stating that their decisive actions made all the difference. “Without your intervention, she would not be alive today,” he said, emphasizing the critical nature of their response.
In light of the recognition, Cody Parks expressed his humility, stating, “I really just did what anyone would do in that moment. Thankfully, Charlie and I were in the right place at the right time.” He highlighted the importance of their actions, noting that the safety of their neighbor was paramount.
Charlie Parks echoed his brother’s sentiments and encouraged others to be vigilant in their communities. “If you see someone in need, help whenever you can,” he advised, emphasizing that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.
The woman involved in the incident is currently recovering from her injuries. The sheriff’s office has reiterated the importance of community involvement in ensuring public safety and standing up against violence.
As the community reflects on this event, the Parks brothers are being hailed as role models for their selfless actions, bringing attention to the power of solidarity in moments of crisis.
