OSWEGO, IL – An afternoon intended to be ordinary in this typically quiet suburb turned into a scene of shock and grief, as authorities say a woman was slain inside her own home while her husband watched helplessly from afar.
According to officials, Ashley Stewart, 41, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday as her new husband monitored security cameras from another location. The man accused in her murder, Ryan D. Dodd, 44, now faces a slew of charges, including first-degree murder, following what authorities have called a violent home invasion.
Police were summoned just after 1 p.m. to a residence in the 400 block of Valentine Way following reports of a break-in in progress. Investigators say Stewart was chased into her garage by her ex-husband, reportedly moments before her husband dialed 911 after witnessing the terrifying encounter through surveillance footage.
When officers arrived, they discovered Stewart had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe Dodd, Stewart’s former spouse, targeted her intentionally, following her into the house before the fatal attack.
Investigations unearthed further disturbing details, including surveillance images that reportedly captured Dodd lurking in nearby shrubbery before the assault. Less than half an hour after the fatal stabbing, an officer spotted Dodd’s vehicle and apprehended him without incident. Formal charges were announced within days, and Dodd remains in Kendall County Jail, held without bond as he awaits a court appearance scheduled for March 9.
Stewart’s death has sent waves of mourning through the community and beyond. She is survived by six children, including a toddler just two years old. Friends and family have described her as a devoted and selfless mother, whose love and dedication to her children were unmistakable.
Supporters have shared memories of Stewart, painting a picture of someone who always prioritized family, who never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and who radiated warmth and kindness to those around her. A fundraising campaign has been established to help her children and honor her memory.
Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active, as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Meanwhile, Stewart’s loved ones are left grappling with her sudden, violent loss, holding on to the legacy of love she leaves behind.
