LANCASTer, Calif. — A 24-year-old man made his initial court appearance on Tuesday, facing severe charges including murder, following the mysterious disappearance of his 3-week-old son from their Palmdale home in early May.
Yusuf Dewees, apprehended by authorities in Utah and extradited back to California, is accused of murdering his infant son Baki Dewees, among other charges. The charges also include assault on a child causing death and child abuse under deadly circumstances. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced these allegations stating the incidents occurred between May 2 and May 3.
During his court appearance in Lancaster, Dewees was ordered to be held on $2 million bail, with further proceedings scheduled for August 7. In a move to shield Dewees from media cameras, his defense attorney positioned himself in front of Dewees.
Investigations have led detectives to comb through a landfill in the Antelope Valley, searching for the infant’s remains, which have not yet been found. According to prosecutors, this tragic event unfolded at a time coinciding with the baby’s grandmother reporting him missing.
The case has drawn considerable attention amid distressing concerns from the family. The infant’s grandmother, Fiti Paulo, expressed her profound disbelief and sorrow over the alleged actions of Dewees. She lamented the loss of the opportunity to cherish her grandson, describing every day since the disappearance as a “nightmare.”
Adding to the grim scene outside the courthouse, State Assemblymember Tom Lackey remarked on the disturbing pattern of child murders in the Antelope Valley, calling for enhanced preventive measures. He emphasized the importance of community and legislative action to address this harrowing issue, which has seen several similar incidents in recent years.
Officials noted that Baki was last seen with his father. At the time of the infant’s disappearance, his mother was incarcerated in Utah, where Dewees was later arrested.
The community and family members are left seeking answers and demanding justice for the inexplicable loss of such a young life, hoping that ongoing investigations will bring clarity and closure to this heart-wrenching case.
