Father Sentenced to 18 Years for Son’s Fentanyl Death, Found with Drugs Under Child’s Sleeping Area

WICHITA, Kan. – A Wichita man was sentenced to 18 years and three months in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges related to his son’s death from fentanyl poisoning.

Calvin Vick, 26, was convicted of distributing a controlled substance that caused great bodily harm or death, as well as aggravated endangerment of a child and distribution of a controlled substance. The case stemmed from the death of his 22-month-old son, Israel Luna-Vick, who was found unresponsive in their Wichita apartment and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

According to court documents, Vick’s sister, who lived in the same apartment, reported finding Israel on the floor near a rolled-up blanket and an infant toy. She initially assumed the child was asleep but later witnessed Vick rushing out of the room with Israel, saying the child was not breathing. She made a 911 call, but no one answered, and later, she discovered tablets containing fentanyl under Israel’s sleeping area during a police search of the apartment. An autopsy revealed that the child had ingested methamphetamine and fentanyl, leading to his death.

Police allege that Vick left the hospital before providing a statement to detectives, but he did speak to officers before leaving, saying, “I don’t want you guys thinking this was drugs.” The convicted man’s sister also told authorities that she had seen her brother in possession of drugs before the incident. After a thorough investigation, Vick was sentenced to prison as a result of his actions that led to the tragic death of his son.

The sentencing serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of drug distribution and the severe consequences it can have, especially when it involves innocent children. This case also highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions in the distribution of dangerous substances like fentanyl. As this case comes to a close with the sentencing of Calvin Vick, the community is left to reflect on the precious life lost and the need for justice to be served in such tragic circumstances.

In summary, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office sentenced Calvin Vick to 219 months in prison for his involvement in the death of his toddler son due to fentanyl ingestion. The case was marked by the heartbreaking loss of a young life and the devastating impact of drug distribution in the community.
