Quesnel, Canada — An investigation is underway following the suspicious deaths of over a dozen cattle in the Quesnel region, prompting the Lhtako Dene Nation to halt a nearby fertilizer project. The cattle, eleven in total, were discovered lifeless close to 300 Forest Service Road, a logging route linking Quesnel and Barkerville.
Initial reports indicate that the cattle may have succumbed to nitrate poisoning, potentially linked to a fertilizer spill during helicopter refueling operations. The British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA) emphasized that the fertilizer was not adequately secured, allowing access to local wildlife and livestock, which may have contributed to the deaths.
Authorities, including B.C.’s Ministry of Forests, have initiated their own inquiries. In a statement, a ministry representative affirmed their commitment to understanding the incident, aiming to ensure similar occurrences are prevented in the future. Sheldon Clare, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince George-North Cariboo, is also actively engaged in the matter. He noted that his office has been in continuous dialogue with the minister and affected stakeholders, including the rancher whose cattle perished. Clare underscored the incident as a troubling reminder of the importance of effective communication and coordination among land users.
