Firefighters Race to Scene of East-Side Explosion, Find Hazardous Conditions in ‘Work in Progress’ Home

San Antonio, Texas – Firefighters responded to a call in an east-side neighborhood early Saturday morning, where residents reported being disturbed by a loud explosion. The incident occurred on Wayne Drive, just outside Loop 410 and south of Rigsby, with the first reports coming in before 7 am.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters observed flames already visible from the highway access road. The incident commander described the cinder block home as a “work in progress,” with heavy smoke emanating from the second story. Chief John Castillo mentioned that the house had electrical wiring issues, leading to the interruption of service by CPS due to unprofessional electrical work.

The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation, as the conditions inside and outside the building made it challenging to ascertain if there was an explosion. Despite the difficult circumstances, firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the fire, preventing any injuries to the man who was inside the home at the time.

Neighbors expressed concerns about the hazardous conditions of the structure, highlighting the accumulation of trash and debris around the property. The structural instability of the second floor forced firefighters to take precautions while battling the blaze.

As the investigation into the fire continues, authorities emphasize the importance of addressing safety hazards in residential properties to prevent similar incidents in the future. The community remains on alert as officials work to determine the exact cause of the fire and ensure the well-being of residents in the neighborhood.
