BROOKSVILLE, FL – A Florida man who secretly wed three women in less than two years, unbeknownst to each other, was sentenced to probation this week after pleading no contest to felony bigamy.
Henry Betsey Jr., 50, avoided jail time but will spend two years under supervised probation and must register as a convicted felon, according to Hernando County court records. Betsey entered a plea of “nolo contendere” in May, indicating he would accept punishment without formally admitting guilt.
Investigators discovered that Betsey’s marriages overlapped, with each woman believing she was the only wife. The case came to light after one of the wives uncovered the deception and reached out to another, igniting a complex legal ordeal.
Betsey’s sequence of marriages began in November 2020 when he wed Tonya Betsey in Duval County after meeting her through Tinder. Tonya said she was attracted to the persona he projected, describing him as attentive and convincing.
His second marriage took place in February 2022, when Brandy Allen married Betsey in Manatee County. Allen said she met him on Stir, a dating app for single parents. She recalled that their courthouse ceremony was quick and unremarkable, and that no red flags emerged during the marriage license process. At the time, she was unaware of Betsey’s first marriage.
Authorities say Betsey married for the third time in November 2022, this time to Michele Narens in Hernando County. Narens said she and Betsey connected quickly after meeting on Match.com, marrying within three weeks.
It was Tonya Betsey who ultimately unraveled the truth after discovering evidence of Henry’s other marriages. She contacted Narens to share the information, setting off a cascade of revelations among the other women.
Narens said she was blindsided when she learned not only that Tonya was still married to Henry, but that she herself was merely the latest in a string of overlapping relationships. The wives later told investigators they suspected Betsey’s motives centered around financial gain rather than genuine affection, citing his rapid interest in joint bank accounts shortly after the nuptials.
Betsey was arrested in October 2024 after turning himself in at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation led authorities to corroborate the multiple marriage licenses filed in separate counties, none of which had flagged his marital status as an issue.
After his arrest, Betsey initiated divorce proceedings with Tonya Betsey and sought annulments for the other two marriages, according to court filings. During sentencing, he delivered an apology to the women in court, though at least one of his former spouses publicly questioned the sincerity of his statement.
With his conviction, Betsey is now barred from owning firearms or voting, and his criminal status is likely to follow him for years. For the women involved, the court’s decision offered a sense of vindication, though some said they doubted whether Betsey expressed any real remorse for the pain his actions caused.
