Former Capitol Police Officer, Harry Dunn, Announces Candidacy for U.S. House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, known for his bravery during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack, announced his bid for the U.S. House in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District on Friday.

Dunn, who testified before the House Jan. 6 select committee about the racial slurs he endured during the insurrection, released a book last year detailing his experience. He has also been honored with the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Citizens Medal for his service during the attack.

In a video released on the eve of the third anniversary of the Capitol riot, Dunn declared his candidacy, emphasizing the need to defend democracy from similar attacks. The 40-year-old, who served as a Capitol police officer for 15 years, is running in the crowded primary to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes.

Dunn’s announcement video features a reenactment of Jan. 6 with a MAGA flag in the background. He has positioned himself in political opposition to Trump to prevent a repeat of the Capitol attack. “We can’t ever let this happen again, and you’ve heard it from Trump himself: He is hellbent on finishing what he started this day,” Dunn said.
