AVON LAKE, Ohio — Kenny Wagner’s life took an unexpected turn when food poisoning ignited a series of critical health issues that transformed him into a vocal advocate for those grappling with serious medical challenges. At 61, Wagner has not only beaten the odds but has also emerged with a renewed purpose after surviving multiple near-death experiences and a heart transplant.
Wagner’s medical journey began in 2013 with what he initially thought was a minor case of food poisoning. Following an uncharacteristic stop at a fast-food restaurant, he found himself hospitalized for five days. By January 2014, nagging abdominal issues led to a shocking diagnosis: his condition had progressed to ulcerative colitis. This diagnosis set the stage for a cascade of health crises, including sepsis, which necessitated emergency surgery to remove his colon in 2016.
After enduring the traumatic surgery, Wagner experienced a significant setback. One evening, he collapsed after a brief walk. His wife, Suzie, witnessed the event and, fearing the worst, immediately began performing CPR while dialing emergency services. Remarkably, Wagner clinically died twelve times over the next several hours, enduring a series of harrowing moments before being stabilized with a stent.
Despite his recovery, his cardiologist, Dr. Michael Zacharias, issued a stark warning about his heart’s uncertain future. Wagner’s health continued to decline, leading to another heart failure in 2021. During an urgent medical intervention, Wagner once again experienced a near-death episode, compelling doctors to insert a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to help circulate blood effectively.
Living with the LVAD, Wagner adapted remarkably, finding creative ways to manage the device while maintaining his daily life. Just when hope seemed dim, he was placed on the transplant waiting list in August 2021. The waiting period was agonizing, spanning 74 days, which included several false alarms regarding available hearts.
During this challenging time, Wagner discovered a sense of purpose as he began to support fellow patients. Spending time with others facing similar struggles became a vital source of strength for him. His faith carried him through the emotional turmoil, a principle he embraced wholeheartedly.
Finally, on December 26, 2023, Wagner received the call he had been hoping for: a suitable heart was available. Shortly thereafter, he underwent the transplant surgery. For Wagner, this event was both a new beginning and a constant reminder of the potential loss involved in organ donation. “Someone has to pass away for me to receive this heart,” he reflected, recognizing the gravity of the gift he had received.
Today, Wagner honors this gift through a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly and maintaining a carefully managed diet. He often thinks of his donor while working out, feeling a profound connection that drives him to appreciate life more fully. Although he has reached out to his donor’s family with hopes of connecting, he has yet to hear back.
In his spare time, Wagner visits hospitals to offer support to patients wrestling with similar issues. His journey has positioned him as a vital resource for others navigating their health challenges, reinforcing the notion that shared experiences can provide comfort and hope.
Kenny Wagner’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the human spirit’s ability to rise above adversity. Through faith and determination, he has emerged not just as a survivor, but as a beacon of hope for those still in the fight.
