Gas Explosion at Fuyang Barbecue Restaurant Blamed on Illegal LPG Delivery and Safety Violations

Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, China – The Chinese government has released its findings on the investigation of a tragic gas explosion that resulted in the death of 31 individuals and the injury of seven at the Fuyang Barbecue Restaurant on June 21, 2023. The explosion occurred in Xingqing district of the capital, Yinchuan, and the investigation revealed a combination of factors that led to the disaster.

According to the investigation, the explosion was caused by the illegal delivery of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders that did not meet safety standards. In addition, the improper use of the cylinder by the restaurant and the failure of local authorities to regulate the gas industry were contributing factors to the incident. The illegally delivered gas cylinders, equipped with a dual valve for both liquid and gaseous fuels, were mistakenly connected to the wrong valve by a restaurant employee, resulting in a gas leak. Subsequent attempts to repair the leak led to a larger gas release, which mixed with air and ignited in the kitchen.

The investigation also uncovered various safety violations at the restaurant, including blocked fire exits and windows, which hindered the escape of individuals during the explosion. It was also revealed that local authorities had been inadequate in regulating the gas industry, contributing to the lack of oversight and safety measures.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and standards in the delivery and use of gas cylinders. It also highlights the critical role of regulatory authorities in overseeing the gas industry to ensure the safety of businesses and the public. Implementing and enforcing proper safety measures, in addition to increasing awareness and training on the proper handling and use of gas equipment, are vital steps in preventing similar incidents in the future. The findings of the investigation will hopefully lead to improved safety protocols and stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
