German Shepherd Symba Shot in Tolleson, Owner Seeks Help for Surgery Costs

TOLLESON, AZ (AP) – A two-year-old German shepherd named Symba is recovering after being shot in the right leg near Country Place Boulevard and West Kerby Avenue in Tolleson last Sunday night. The dog’s owner, Bridgett Ivy, rescued Symba from an abusive home in which he was being mistreated. She described Symba as a gentle and beloved member of her family, and she expressed disbelief that anyone would harm him.

Despite being in pain, Symba’s spirits are high, and Ivy is hopeful for his recovery. However, the dog will require surgery to amputate his leg due to the severity of his injuries. Ivy’s brother and roommate were walking Symba and another dog when a man identified as Ruben Garza allegedly shot the dog from across the street.

Court documents revealed that Garza, who had previously been convicted for second-degree murder and aggravated assault, was a prohibited possessor of firearms. This history adds further tragedy to the situation, as Ivy now faces substantial medical bills in addition to the emotional toll of Symba’s injuries.

To help cover the costs of Symba’s surgery and rehabilitation, Ivy has launched a fundraiser. This is scheduled for Monday, and Ivy is optimistic that the surgery will mark the beginning of Symba’s road to recovery. The community has already shown support, with many expressing sympathy and offering financial assistance to help Symba.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern for the safety of pets and people in the neighborhood. Despite this, the community is hopeful for Symba’s recovery and remains committed to supporting Ivy and her beloved pet during this difficult time.
