Grieving Mother Seeks Justice for Murdered Son as Accused Killer Remains at Large

Shelby, North Carolina – Phyllis Ruff is a mother who will never forget the day her son, Timothy, was born. Despite the fond memories, she is now facing the heartbreaking reality of living without her firstborn and seeking answers surrounding his untimely death.

Timothy Lamont Ruff, 50, tragically lost his life on March 29th after being shot and killed by Jonathan Martzes Petty, 41, outside an apartment building in Shelby. The fatal incident stemmed from a verbal altercation that turned deadly when Petty opened fire, leaving Ruff fatally wounded. As of now, Petty remains at large, with authorities warning the public that he is armed and dangerous.

Phyllis recalls her son as a caring and loving individual, despite his intimidating appearance. She reminisces about his love for his family, particularly his nieces and nephews, and his passion for fishing. Just days before the tragic event, Timothy had visited his mother, showing his affection by calling her “baby” before expressing his plans to cook fish the following day.

Having recently reconnected after Timothy’s 20-year incarceration and subsequent release in February 2022, Phyllis cherishes the short time she had with her son. Describing him as loyal and impactful, she laments the loss and wonders why her son was taken from her in such a brutal manner.

As the grieving mother prays for justice and closure, she pleads for Petty to surrender and answer for his actions. With memories of her son playing Tupac’s “Dear Mama” in her mind, she reflects on the pain of losing a child to senseless violence.

Authorities have issued warrants for Petty’s arrest on charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Anyone with information on Petty’s whereabouts is urged to contact Capt. Seth Treadway at 704-484-6845.

In the midst of tragedy, Phyllis clings to the memories of her beloved son, forever etched in her heart and mind. As she seeks solace in memories of better days, she remains hopeful that justice will prevail for Timothy and that she will find peace in the midst of sorrow.
