Guam Getaway Driver Explains Motive in South Korean Tourist Killing

Hagatna, Guam — A tragic incident in which a South Korean tourist was killed last week has led to the arrest of two suspects, one of whom has been charged with complicity to commit murder. The shocking events unfolded after a $100 gambling loss drove Stefan Keanu Camacho and Keoki Santos to allegedly rob a tourist in the Tumon area.

Camacho told police that after the pair borrowed and lost the money, they decided to snatch someone’s purse. Driving from the Beach Bar, they found Hea Jun Hwang, 60, and his wife walking back from a show. Santos then pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her purse, leading to a struggle and the fatal shooting of Hwang.

The suspects each took $75 from the robbery and discarded the purse, bank cards, and other items while driving. Camacho later led investigators to the discarded items, but after the shooting, he spray-painted his vehicle rims to throw off investigators. Despite their efforts, a tip and surveillance footage led police to the suspects, both from Yona.

Santos, who was attending drug court for a 2021 methamphetamine case, died by suicide when approached by police. Camacho, on the other hand, was located in a game room and now faces a sentence of life in prison plus 77 years if convicted, as per the charging documents.

The Korean couple was on vacation in Guam to celebrate their retirement when the tragic incident occurred. Acting Gov. Joshua Tenorio has expressed condolences and ensured that justice will prevail in this heartbreaking case. An autopsy confirmed that Hwang died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, with a 9mm bullet found at the scene. The case serves as a grim reminder of the impact of crime on innocent victims and the importance of justice in such matters.
