Gun Violence in Newark Claims Lives of Young Boy and Woman; Community Urged to Help Police Find Shooter

Newark, New Jersey, is grappling with tragedy after a shooting on Saturday evening left two victims dead, including a 10-year-old boy. The violent incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Chancellor Avenue, where the sound of gunfire prompted local residents to seek shelter.

Authorities reported that the barrage of bullets struck five individuals, with the young boy and a 21-year-old woman succumbing to their injuries shortly after being transported to University Hospital. In addition to the fatalities, three others—a 60-year-old man and two males aged 11 and 19—remained hospitalized but were reported to be in stable condition as of Sunday morning.

Local officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, are calling for the shooter to turn themselves in. Baraka expressed his outrage over the senseless violence that has become all too common in communities across the nation. He emphasized the need for residents to stand together against such acts, urging anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to come forward with information.

Lamont Vaughn, a representative from Newark’s Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery, shared his concern regarding the growing frequency of gun-related incidents that devastate families. “This pain is not easily manageable. It requires a comprehensive response from the community, local authorities, and families alike,” Vaughn remarked, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to combat violence.

The shooting sent ripples of fear through the neighborhood, as evidenced by the presence of at least 17 evidence markers scattered across the scene, indicating the severity of the attack. As police investigate, they are relying on the public for help in identifying the perpetrator.

Authorities have established a tips hotline through the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to reach out. They assured that all calls would remain confidential.

As Newark deals with the aftermath of this tragic event, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles many communities face in the battle against gun violence and its profound impact on families and neighborhoods alike.
