Sydney, Australia – A heroic French construction worker who bravely confronted a knife-wielding attacker in a Sydney shopping mall has received a remarkable offer from the Australian Prime Minister. Damien Guerot, nicknamed “Bollard Man” on social media, intervened in an attack where six people tragically lost their lives.
The security camera footage captured Guerot standing at the top of an escalator, ready to fend off the attacker, Joel Cauchi, with a plastic bollard. Thanks to Guerot’s courageous actions, Cauchi was unable to harm anyone on Guerot’s floor before fleeing down the escalator.
Despite Guerot’s temporary work visa expiring in July, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stepped in and extended a warm invitation to the French national. Albanese stated, “You are welcome here, you are welcome to stay for as long as you like.” The Prime Minister even expressed a desire for Guerot to become an Australian citizen, recognizing his bravery and selfless act.
Amidst the chaos and tragedy of the attack, Guerot’s lawyer confirmed that the government has assured him of receiving an Australian permanent resident visa. Guerot was one of several individuals commended for their brave intervention in preventing further harm during the attack.
The toll of the attack could have been significantly higher if not for the quick thinking and bravery displayed by Guerot and others who intervened. Authorities revealed that the attacker specifically targeted women, resulting in the deaths of five individuals.
Not only has Guerot been reassured of his permanent residency status, but both the ruling government and opposition party have expressed support for his citizenship. Opposition leader Peter Dutton echoed the sentiment, stating, “We would want people of that character in our country.”
