Home invasion group targets Asian families in Washington state and kill 36-year-old mother as she sleeps

EVERETT, WA – In the pre-dawn hours of an August morning, terror shattered the peace of an Everett family when an armed intruder slipped into their home, changing their lives forever.

On Aug. 19, 2022, 36-year-old Irah Sok was asleep next to her husband and young son when the door to their bedroom was forced open. Within moments, Sok was fatally shot in the head—a single, devastating act carried out while her family was helplessly at her side. Authorities say Christopher Johnson, 24, will soon formally admit his guilt in her murder, marking the grim end to a string of violent home invasions that spanned months and targeted vulnerable households.

Investigators revealed that Johnson was no lone wolf. He is believed to have helped lead a criminal network that unleashed a spree of violence, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and burglary, across numerous counties in Washington and beyond. Court documents describe how the group plotted their attacks meticulously, conducting surveillance, scouring social media for potential victims, and studying daily routines before finally striking in the darkest hours between 2 and 5 a.m.

Prosecutors allege that members of the gang, including Johnson, specifically set their sights on Asian families. Believing these households to be less likely to resist, the group executed a wave of break-ins characterized by chilling precision and brutality.

During their raids, the intruders disguised themselves with masks and often claimed to be police officers to catch their victims off guard. They restrained entire families, some including children as young as 9, using zip ties and fear as their weapons. Once inside, they ransacked the homes, gathering up whatever valuables and luxury goods they could find before vanishing into the night.

On the night of Sok’s murder, authorities say Johnson and two accomplices entered her home before 3 a.m. Sok’s husband was forced to the floor, bound with zip ties, while his wife was shot. Thousands of dollars’ worth of possessions were taken, but the trauma left behind was immeasurable.

Sok, a beloved local photographer renowned for her work with mothers and newborns, had opened her studio only months before. Her sudden loss rippled through the Everett community, where her gentle nature and artistic talent had left a lasting mark.

After fleeing with stolen goods, Johnson and his accomplices left behind a scene of horror. Sok’s husband, managing to break free of his restraints, rushed to seek help, while their 7-year-old son remained physically unharmed but forever changed by what he witnessed.

Johnson has pleaded guilty to a series of federal racketeering charges related to the robbery spree and is expected to enter a plea of guilty to second-degree murder in state court in the coming days. Sentencing for his federal crimes is scheduled for early May.

Authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the criminal enterprise that orchestrated these attacks, seeking justice not only for Sok’s family but for all those left traumatized by a spree that spread fear across entire neighborhoods.
