Illinois bar owner shot execution style by thief as she opens her bar for the night

MOMENCE, IL – The tranquility of a Monday morning in the small town of Momence was shattered when the owner of a longtime neighborhood bar became the victim of a fatal robbery, prompting a regional search that ended across state lines.

Authorities say Courtney Drysdale, 30, was opening The Line, her bar only a few miles from the Illinois-Indiana border, when she was confronted by an armed man who demanded cash. Although Drysdale complied, investigators allege the suspect shot her twice at close range before fleeing the scene.

Kankakee County Sheriff’s deputies, responding to the scene, quickly began piecing together what had happened from surveillance footage and witness accounts. The investigation intensified after the release of images captured by nearby cameras. Within hours, the sheriff’s office reported an outpouring of tips that helped them track down their suspect.

Just over 24 hours after the killing, officers arrested Julius Burkes Jr., 47, outside his residence in Hammond, Indiana. Officials said Burkes attempted to tamper with what he believed to be security cameras inside the bar, but detectives were still able to recover video evidence critical to the case.

“We had tremendous support from the community,” Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey told reporters at a press conference hours before Burkes’ arrest. He described the incident as an act of violence that has left the tightly knit town in disbelief and mourning.

Drysdale, remembered by friends as a dedicated mother, fiancée, and entrepreneur, was known across the community for her warm personality and years of service behind the bar before she took over as owner. Those close to her say she leaves behind a young daughter and a partner, and her loss has sent shockwaves through the lives she touched.

The Line, which had served as a community hub for locals, has closed its doors indefinitely following the tragedy. Social media tributes and messages of condolence continue to pour in, underscoring the impact Drysdale made in Momence.

Authorities indicated Burkes is being held in Indiana as they begin the extradition process, which will bring him back to Illinois to face first-degree murder and armed robbery charges.

Investigators have not commented on possible motives or any relationship between the suspect and victim, but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff Downey commended the quick cooperation between Illinois and Indiana law enforcement agencies, which he said was crucial to bringing about an arrest so soon after the crime.

As the town grapples with the loss, flowers and handwritten notes line the bar’s entrance—a testament to a community united in grief and determination to see justice served.
