New Delhi, India – As the nation grapples with a resurgence of Covid-19, the confirmed death toll has surpassed 100, climbing to 108 after 11 fatalities were reported in a single day, marking the highest daily increase during this wave. The state of Kerala, experiencing the brunt of the surge, accounted for seven of those deaths, while the others were recorded in Delhi, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
The victims in Kerala, predominantly over the age of 60, suffered from pre-existing health conditions such as cancer, pancreatitis, kidney disease, and pneumonia. A similar profile emerged from the victim in Delhi, a 67-year-old man with a history of lung cancer. Health officials have stressed that the majority of recent deaths are connected to underlying health issues.
Active Covid-19 cases have seen an upward trend, with Kerala reporting the highest count at 1,920. This is followed by Gujarat with 1,433 cases, Delhi with 649, and Maharashtra with 540. Additional cases have been noted in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana over the past week.
Experts suspect that new sub-variants of the virus may be driving the current uptick in cases, with the ability to bypass the immunity gained from previous infections and vaccinations. Despite the increase in cases, health specialists indicate that the latest variant does not appear to be causing severe illness among most patients.
Dr. Rommel Tickoo, the director of internal medicine at Max Saket, reassured the public, stating that the symptoms often align more closely with those of a common flu. He emphasized that blanket testing for Covid-19 is not necessary for everyone presenting with fever, cough, or cold symptoms. Instead, treatment typically involves symptomatic care and resting at home. He advised that those exhibiting Covid-like symptoms should isolate to prevent potential spread.
While most cases are currently being managed at home, health authorities are urging states to bolster their medical infrastructure as a precautionary measure. This includes ensuring the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines to effectively address any potential escalation in cases.
As vigilance continues, health officials remain focused on monitoring the situation closely. The current surge serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and maintaining health protocols as the country navigates through this challenging phase.
