Indian-Origin Woman Murdered in California, Body Sent to India by Consulate Amid Shock and Grief

MANTECA, California – The body of Manjeet Kaur, a 38-year-old Indian-origin woman who was allegedly murdered by her husband Surinder Singh on New Year’s eve, was sent to India on January 11 following an intervention by the Indian consulate in San Francisco. Consul General Dr. K. Srikar Reddy said, “We are paying for transportation of mortal remains of the deceased and working with Team Aid organization in this regard.” Team Aid founder Mohan Nannapaneni expressed deep distress at the brutal murder of Manjeet Kaur. The non-profit organization, founded in 2017, assists people living abroad during unexpected tragedies and helps organize the repatriation of mortal remains from the US to their home country. Kaur’s remains will be received in Ludhiana in Punjab by her parents and siblings, as well as her 18-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

Surinder Singh, 62, is facing criminal charges, including murder and domestic violence. Court documents show that Singh has been charged with PC 187(A) Felony (murder) and PC 12022(B) (using a deadly or dangerous weapon). Kaur’s family members from the state of Punjab, India, expressed shock and disappointment at the dismissive responses of Manteca police to their attempts to understand the events of December 31. According to Kaur’s elder brother Gurjeet Randhawa, Singh’s behavior changed drastically after the couple moved to the US six months ago. Kaur had previously faced domestic violence and had to flee the house and call the police for help.

The tragic case of Manjeet Kaur highlights the issue of domestic violence and the challenges faced by victims, particularly in immigrant communities. The family’s suspicions and concerns about Singh’s behavior and motives raise questions about the resources and support available to victims of domestic violence, especially those from immigrant backgrounds. The case also underscores the need for greater awareness and intervention to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

In conclusion, the murder of Manjeet Kaur is a devastating example of the consequences of domestic violence. The family’s grief and frustration at the lack of support from the authorities also shed light on the challenges faced by victims of such crimes. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of providing resources and assistance to individuals facing domestic violence, particularly in immigrant communities.
