ELKHART, IN – A northern Indiana man has pleaded guilty to murdering his 6-year-old son, months after the child died from injuries authorities say could only have come from a brutal assault in their family home.
Franklin Elmore Jr., 29, admitted in court last month to fatally beating his son, Justin, following an intense investigation that uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse. Both Elmore and his wife, Cheyenne, were arrested in August, each facing murder charges in connection with the child’s death.
The case began on the night of August 3, when emergency responders arrived at the Elmore residence after a 911 call reported young Justin was unresponsive. According to investigators, Franklin Elmore initially tried to claim that his son had caused his own injuries by hitting his head. However, hospital staff found the boy suffering from a catastrophic brain injury and a punctured lung—trauma that medical experts determined could not have been self-inflicted.
Authorities say the investigation exposed a household where harsh punishments were common. Court records indicated that the boy was frequently disciplined with belts or by hand, subjected to hours of forced exercise, and regularly suffered from injuries. Images recovered from the couple’s mobile phones showed Justin with visible bruises and other wounds over a period of time, officials said.
Further scrutiny revealed that Cheyenne Elmore, the child’s stepmother, often made complaints to her husband about the boy’s behavior, which prosecutors say may have contributed to the ongoing mistreatment.
The boy’s biological mother, Miranda McBride, said she had tried to alert Indiana authorities about the alleged abuse prior to his death but was told no intervention would be made since no visible bruises were observed during previous checks.
Franklin Elmore’s admission in court included an acknowledgment that he “physically beat” his son, though he maintained that he did not intend to kill him. Despite his statement and claims by his defense attorney of a plea deal, prosecutors later clarified that no agreement had been formalized with Elmore.
Cheyenne Elmore, 27, has pleaded not guilty to her murder charge. Her trial is set for February 2026, with a court appearance scheduled this December.
Meanwhile, Franklin Elmore remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 25, court records show. His trial date has been canceled following his guilty plea.
Investigators say the tragedy underscores the importance of thorough child welfare checks and follow-up during reports of potential abuse, issues that are expected to be revisited in upcoming legal proceedings.
