Indiana man decapitates his father with a foot long knife and says it was because he was evil

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN – A 73-year-old man was found decapitated in his own home Friday morning, prompting a police investigation and leaving a quiet Jeffersonville neighborhood in shock.

Authorities responded to the 1700 block of Summerlin Place around 10 a.m. after the victim’s ex-wife requested a welfare check. She told officers she was worried about Erich V. Winnecke Sr.’s safety amid ongoing issues between him and their son, 33-year-old Bryce William Winnecke.

When law enforcement arrived, they encountered a tense and disturbing scene. A four-hour standoff ensued as SWAT officers attempted to make contact with those inside the residence. Flash-bang devices were deployed during efforts to communicate before Bryce Winnecke was persuaded to come out and surrender peacefully.

After regaining control of the property, investigators entered the single-family home and discovered the victim’s body. According to police documents, the decapitation was particularly gruesome; the victim’s head was initially missing from the crime scene.

Further investigation led officials to search additional locations, where they eventually found the severed head in the bedroom of Bryce Winnecke. The discovery intensified the severity of an already grisly case that police say has traumatized responding officers and the wider community.

Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh described the events as “horrific,” urging the public to remember the family impacted by this tragic loss. He emphasized the profound effect the incident is having on the entire neighborhood.

Bryce Winnecke was taken into custody on charges of murder and abuse of a corpse. Currently Winnecke is held at Clark County Jail as authorities continue to process evidence and interview witnesses.

People living on Summerlin Place expressed disbelief about the violent episode, describing the area as peaceful and family-oriented. Residents say police activity of this magnitude is rare, and many were disturbed by the news that such violence had occurred so close to home.

The investigation is ongoing as officials work to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the homicide. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing, but confirm that family conflict played a role.

Detectives continue to urge anyone with information about the case to come forward. No other suspects have been named, and police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety.

As the community grapples with the aftermath, city leaders are emphasizing the importance of supporting both the family of the victim and neighbors affected by the shocking crime.
