INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Authorities in Indiana have charged a woman with felony neglect and fraud, accusing her of fabricating the severity of her daughter’s illness to gain public sympathy and financial support. Katherine Jackson, 41, faces these serious allegations after a lengthy investigation revealed discrepancies in her claims regarding her child’s health.
According to court documents, Jackson reportedly misled the public, stating her daughter was suffering from a terminal illness. This portrayal garnered considerable attention, with Jackson appearing on local media and setting up a GoFundMe page, seeking assistance ostensibly to fulfill her daughter’s wish to visit Walt Disney World. She claimed her daughter, then five years old, had less than a year to live.
Prosecutors assert that Jackson’s assertions about her daughter’s condition were grossly exaggerated. Although the child indeed suffers from Pilarowski-Bjornsson Syndrome (PBS), a rare genetic disorder, it is chronic rather than terminal. Similarly, claims about a severe, seizure-causing disorder, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), were also part of the narrative presented to solicit help.
In addition to misrepresenting her daughter’s condition, authorities say Jackson neglected to provide necessary medical care. Doctors at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital became concerned after discovering that Jackson was not obtaining the prescribed medications intended to manage her daughter’s symptoms.
This discovery came shortly after a media piece highlighted the child’s condition in August 2022. Three weeks later, Jackson sought hospital care for her daughter, prompting medical professionals to suspect abuse because of the persistence of her symptoms and lack of appropriate medication.
Amid these revelations, Jackson’s other two children were also placed under scrutiny. They were removed from her care and put into foster care, where further concerns regarding their well-being—such as not being potty trained or enrolled in school—were raised.
Charged with one count of fraud and two counts of neglect of a dependent, Jackson now faces a legal battle as these allegations unfold. The charges underscore the severity of fabricating medical conditions for personal gain, shedding light on the need for scrutiny in such emotionally charged situations.
