Belfast, Northern Ireland – Families of the victims of the infamous bombing at McGurk’s Bar back in 1971 have been informed that new inquests may be warranted following the discovery of fresh evidence. The attorney general’s recommendation for new hearings comes after revelations about the proximity of Army observation posts in the area at the time of the attack.
The bombing, orchestrated by the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), resulted in the tragic loss of 15 lives. Survivors and relatives of the deceased suspect that British armed forces may have had prior knowledge of the impending attack. Despite one individual being convicted of all 15 murders in 1978, doubts persist about the involvement and actions of the military leading up to the tragedy.
Interestingly, the newly unearthed evidence concerning the Army’s positioning near the bombing site has brought about the prospect of revisiting the case through fresh inquests. However, the looming deadline set by the Legacy Act, effective from May 1, casts a shadow over the possibility of further investigations into Troubles-era incidents.
The families of Edward and Sarah Keenan, two victims of the bombing, received a letter from Attorney General Dame Brenda King advising that a new inquest would be beneficial in shedding light on the events preceding the attack.
