Investigation of 2016 Murder of Dallas Lawyer Dismissed, But Not Over

Dallas, Texas – The investigation into the 2016 murder of Dallas attorney Ira Tobolowsky continues, despite the dismissal of charges against the prime suspect, Steven Aubrey. He was set to stand trial this month, 8 years after the killing.

Criminal defense attorney Bob Hinton, a friend of the victim, expressed disappointment, saying the victim’s family deserves a better outcome from the case. He also criticized the handling of the case by the Dallas Police Department, stating that it had been allowed to go cold by earlier investigators.

According to a court record, Tobolowsky was beaten, doused with gasoline, and set on fire with a torch in the garage of his North Dallas home in May 2016. Hinton, who has practiced law for 50 years, described the case as complex and significant.

Tobolowsky’s sons have been vocal about seeking justice for their father, who had spinal problems and walked with a limp. The motive for the murder was believed to be related to Tobolowsky’s work in helping Aubrey’s mother remove her son from his inheritance.

After six years, Steven Aubrey was arrested following an investigation led by a new Dallas detective. Despite evidence connecting Aubrey to the crime, the Dallas County District Attorney signed a court document to dismiss the charges for further investigation.

Following the dismissal, Hinton expressed concern but acknowledged that there is no statute of limitations on homicide, leaving open the possibility of filing another case in the future.

Steven Aubrey was released from jail, with the investigation still ongoing, as confirmed by a Dallas Police spokesman. The victim’s family and attorneys for Aubrey did not respond to requests for comments.
