Israel seeks advice from Marine Corps general on Gaza ground operation

Tel Aviv, Israel – With the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn has reportedly arrived in Israel to provide counsel to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The purpose of his visit is to offer guidance on their current operations and in preparation for an anticipated ground incursion into Gaza. According to a US official familiar with the matter, Glynn’s decades of experience will enable him to provide valuable advice on the broader aspects of the conflict.

Although the official did not disclose specific details about the advice or counsel Glynn will provide, it is known that Glynn currently serves as the deputy commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, with previous leadership of the Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and combat experience in Iraq. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that several American military officers, including Glynn, were sent to Israel to offer their expertise in operations similar to those conducted and expected by the IDF.

The primary focus of the American officers in Israel is to assist in asking tough questions and addressing concerns about minimizing civilian casualties. This visit is part of ongoing efforts by the US and its allies to urge Israel to be transparent about its objectives in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a prolonged occupation and prioritizing civilian safety. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have expressed their goal of eliminating Hamas and its infrastructure, with discussions ongoing regarding clear objectives for degrading Hamas while avoiding a long-term occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Glynn’s role in Israel is separate from the special operations forces team sent by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to assist with intelligence and planning related to hostage rescue efforts in the aftermath of the recent Hamas attack. The visit by Glynn and other military officers underscores the heightened focus on ensuring a strategic and humanitarian approach to the conflict in Gaza. As the situation continues to unfold, the collaboration between the US and Israel remains crucial in addressing the complexities and challenges of the conflict.
