Lake Mead Officials Issue Warning After Multiple Fatalities Over Father’s Day Weekend

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After a series of tragic incidents, officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area have issued a warning for visitors to prioritize safety while enjoying the recreation area. Over Father’s Day Weekend, there were multiple fatalities and rescues reported, prompting the National Park Service to urge visitors to take extra precautions.

The incidents included three fatalities from a multiple-car accident, two drowning deaths, and one apparent death by suicide. In addition to the fatalities, park rangers conducted 23 rescues, and responded to reports of criminal incidents such as assault, theft, and drug use.

Acting Superintendent Mike Gauthier emphasized the need to prioritize safety and considerate behavior toward others while at the park. He urged visitors to adhere to safety measures such as wearing life jackets while in the water and observing the speed limit in the area.

Lake Mead, spanning across Nevada and Arizona, is a popular destination, attracting millions of visitors annually. It covers 1.5 million acres, offering diverse landscapes such as valleys, mountains, and canyons, and is home to two lakes – Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. However, recent years have seen dramatic changes in water levels, with six bodies found in the recreational area’s waters since 2022.

Despite the recent tragedies, park officials and rangers are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors, emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior and adherence to safety guidelines.
