Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, is mourning the loss of a 19-year-old student following a tragic shooting incident at a house party in nearby Tallmadge Township. Connor Lotterman, who was pursuing a degree in engineering, succumbed to his injuries on May 10, just one day after the event.
The shooting occurred late on May 9, just after 11 p.m., at a residence located near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Lake Michigan Drive NW. Investigators report that a 20-year-old man from Jenison fired several rounds from an upstairs bedroom, with one bullet striking Lotterman in the head. He was promptly transported to a local hospital but ultimately died from his injuries.
Authorities have not publicly identified the shooter, and an estimated 10 to 20 individuals were present at the party during the incident. While alcohol is believed to have played a role, the Ottawa County Medical Examiner has classified Lotterman’s death as accidental. Nevertheless, prosecutors are exploring potential criminal charges against the individual who discharged the weapon. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department described the shooting as intentional, despite the accidental nature of the death.
The university community is expressing deep sorrow over Lotterman’s untimely death. GVSU Dean of Students Aaron Haight shared condolences on behalf of President Mantella and the entire campus, emphasizing the support available through the university’s mental health resources for both students and staff during this challenging time.
Honoring his memory, memorial services were conducted on Thursday and Friday in Hudsonville, with a funeral service held on Saturday at Grace Protestant Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Born in Grand Rapids, Lotterman was the youngest of five siblings and graduated from Covenant Christian High School just a year prior.
