JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man found inside a garage in the Mandarin neighborhood on Tuesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The shooting, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., has drawn attention in a community grappling with a recent surge in violence.
The victim, identified as 43-year-old Stephen Shahly, was discovered deceased in a garage on Rustic Green Court. Family members mourned his loss, with Shahly’s brother-in-law describing him as a devoted father and a positive influence in the community. “He was a good man, but even a better father,” the brother-in-law said, highlighting Shahly’s role as a moral anchor for younger members of the neighborhood.
Neighbors expressed their shock at the events unfolding close to home. One resident shared their disbelief, saying, “It’s a sad thing. Not the kind of thing that you hear back here,” underscoring the unexpected nature of the violence in an otherwise quiet area.
Authorities have named Donald Rentfrow Jr. as the alleged shooter. He was taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at his residence Tuesday morning. Rentfrow was interviewed by law enforcement before being formally charged in connection with the incident.
This incident marks the latest in a troubling pattern of gun violence in Jacksonville, with officials noting that it was the tenth shooting reported in the city since Friday night and the third occurrence within a 24-hour period. The rapid succession of shootings has raised concern among residents and police alike.
In addition to Shahly’s death, police reported two additional shootings over the past few days. On Monday afternoon, a man was hospitalized after being shot multiple times outside his home in Northwest Jacksonville. He is currently in stable condition. Earlier that same night, another shooting took place at a Baymeadows Road business, resulting in another fatality.
As police continue their investigation and work to address the recent spike in violence, community members are left searching for answers and remembering those lost to the gunfire. The escalating situation has sparked discussions about safety and the growing need for preventive measures in the area.
